Planet B-Boy

When you hear the word “Breakdancer”, you probably get images of people in the inner city strangely dancing to hip-hop in semi-gymnastic movements.  Mention the term “Breakdancer” to one of the people doing the dancing, and you’re most likely to be the recipient of a nasty look, or a look that says something like, “You just don’t get it”.  Somebody might even be gracious enough to explain to you that their proper title is “B-Boy” (or B-Girl), and they take their art seriously.

The history of the B-Boy is very interesting, as it finds its roots in the latter half of the 20th century in the Bronx district of New York City, NY, and now finds itself in nearly every country of the world.  B-Boys battle in competitions, both from the simple battles on the streets to the large international competitions like the ones documented in the new film “Planet B-Boy” which came out this past Friday, March 21st.

A couple years ago, when I was living in Nashville, TN, I had the opportunity to hang out with a group of B-Boys, and I must say I was quite impressed with their physical accomplishments.  After watching them do what they do, it gave me a whole new respect  for the dance form.  I think it should be allowed into the Olympics.

Check out the trailer for “B-Boy Planet” below, and let me know what you think.  I’m hoping to see it the first chance I get.  I haven’t looked yet, but my guess is that it won’t be a “wide release”.
